About Our Gravel Driveways

A gravel driveway needs proper preparation to avoid rutting, sinking and spreading: we excavate to the right depth, lay a geotextile membrane to stop the stone working into the ground, then build up a compacted sub-base before topping with your chosen gravel or shingle finish. Permeable gravel grids can be fitted under high-traffic or soft-ground drives to stop shifting, with edging installed to keep the stone contained.

Why Choose Us

We're a small, local team covering Nottingham, Lincoln, Derby and Mansfield, and we deal with customers directly rather than through layers of office staff.

That means straight answers about what your ground actually needs before you commit to anything.

What Affects the Price

  • Size and shape of the driveway area
  • Depth of excavation needed and volume of sub-base required
  • Whether a permeable gravel grid is specified
  • Type and grade of gravel or shingle chosen
  • Style of edging and amount of edging needed

Common Questions

Will the gravel spread everywhere?

Some scatter at the edges is normal with any loose gravel surface, but proper edging and a well-compacted sub-base keep most of it contained. Gravel grids also help a lot if the drive gets regular vehicle turning movements, which is usually what causes the worst spreading.

Does a gravel driveway need much maintenance?

It needs less than people expect, but not none. Occasional raking to even it out, topping up areas that thin over time, and keeping weeds down will keep it looking right.

Can gravel be laid over an existing driveway?

It depends what's underneath. If there's a sound, well-drained sub-base already in place we may be able to work with it, but most jobs need the existing surface excavated so the membrane and sub-base go in properly.
