About Our Retaining Walls

Retaining walls hold back a change in ground level, whether a sloped garden being levelled into terraces, a raised bed or a border, and need to manage the pressure of the ground and water behind them or they'll lean, crack or fail over time. We build in brick, block, stone or timber sleepers with free-draining backfill, a geotextile membrane and weep holes or a land drain to let water escape, flagging upfront where taller structures need additional design input.

What's Included

  • Excavation and preparation of the wall foundation
  • Construction in brick, block, natural stone or timber sleepers
  • Free-draining backfill behind the wall
  • Geotextile membrane to prevent soil migration into the drainage layer
  • Weep holes or land drain to manage water pressure behind the wall
  • Capping or finish to the top of the wall

How It Works

  1. 1Site visit to assess the slope, height needed and ground conditions
  2. 2Discuss materials and finish, and agree height and layout
  3. 3Excavate and prepare a solid foundation for the wall
  4. 4Build the wall, backfilling and installing drainage as the work progresses
  5. 5Cap or finish the top of the wall and reinstate surrounding ground
  6. 6Final check of drainage, level and stability before handover

Why Choose Us

Retaining walls are one of those jobs where cutting corners on drainage shows up years later as a leaning or cracked wall, so we build in proper drainage as standard rather than as an extra.

What Affects the Price

  • Height and length of the wall needed
  • Ground conditions and how much excavation and spoil removal is involved
  • Choice of material (brick, block, stone or sleepers)
  • Drainage provision required behind the wall
  • Access to the site for materials and machinery

Common Questions

Do I need permission to build a retaining wall?

It depends on the height and location, taller walls or those near a boundary can have additional requirements. We can flag anything that looks like it needs checking before work starts.

Why do retaining walls need drainage?

Without somewhere for water to go, it builds up behind the wall and adds pressure that the wall wasn't built to resist, which is a common reason older retaining walls lean or crack.

Can you build a low retaining wall for a raised bed?

Yes, smaller retaining structures for raised beds or borders are a common job, and while the design considerations are simpler than a full-height garden wall, drainage still matters.
